How Betsy Pepine Redefined Her Career and Life

Betsy Pepine, a serial entrepreneur and accomplished author, is no stranger to stepping outside the boundaries of traditional expectations. For much of her career, she has owned various businesses in the real estate industry, including a real estate brokerage, a property management company, a title business, and a real estate school, successfully defying the definition of a person who can survive as an entrepreneur.

Betsy’s recent book, Breaking Boxes: Dismantling the Metaphorical Boxes that Bind Us, seeks to reveal the reality of how society and the self impose needless restrictions on us. In an interview with Fox 5 Good Day DC, Betsy recently recounted her own experience of breaking out of the boxes within which she had formerly been bound and how this shift changed her career and life.

Understanding the Boxes That Bind Us

While looking back at her life experiences during the interview, Betsy honestly discussed how these metaphorical boxes can sometimes be traps from within ourselves. It does not matter whether they are self-created or originate from other people; such limitations can hinder personal or professional growth. She shared that she was at one stage in her life where her career did not match her future vision, a common struggle many people face.

“I think for me, it was understanding what I really wanted,” Betsy said while recalling one of the turning points in her process. She did an exercise called Future Vision Exercise in which she imagined how her everyday life would be about ten or twenty years from then. The career she was then practicing did not align with her vision. This was the first step prior to closing the gap that existed between where she was and where she hoped to be.

Saying Yes to Yourself

Getting out of these boxes can be challenging. It often requires us to stir the waters and bear backlash from those who have a fixed view of us in one particular role. As Betsy has put it, however, the point is to learn to say “yes”  to yourself.

Even if you feel uncomfortable or receive disapproving glares from others when you try to step outside your own boundaries, it’s important to understand that these barriers are mostly temporary.

“What’s the worst case? Somebody may not like your decision. Is that okay?” she asked. “Most of the time, when we walk through the worst-case scenario, we realize we can live with it. It may be uncomfortable or not what we initially wanted, but it’s going to be okay.”

Empowerment Through Action

Betsy’s message is clear: empowerment comes through action. Every single metaphorical box that confides a person has the potential to provide tremendous growth. That includes jumping into a business, publishing a book, or any other dare to start living life as one is supposed to.

Her book, Breaking Boxes, is the perfect tool and motivation for all those who wish to let go of the constraints. Having been a successful businesswoman, Betsy Pepine argues that not only is it possible to escape those limitations— it is how life should be if true vision is to be achieved.
